Rejecting Oppressive Relationships:  The Logic of Cultural Pluralism for a Diverse Society

Pluralism is the greatest philosophical ideal of our time – John Dewey (1859-1952)

Exercise 1:  Exercise 2:  Terms and definitions

Pluralism (cultural pluralism) – The equal coexistence of diverse cultures in a mutually supportive relationship within the boundaries of one nation.  (p. 177)
Separatism:  The conceptual belief in the notion of establishing entirely separate societies for each distinct racial, ethnic, or other groups that exist within a society (p. 177)

Show a DVD clip of “black and white” – first one of Number 3 (in the plastic folder), share the answers with the groups (or whole class).

 

1.      List at least a few things that you never knew before about the “black and white” issues

2.      Share how you feel about the U.S. racial tensions and how “cultural pluralism” may be an answer or not an answer to the situations.
